The 400-Year Eyes
“A riot in my heart exists and my words, are the bricks…”

I clench these fists,
not out of anger,
but of defying the harsh gravity
of injustices
I clench these fists
not out of hate,
but out of love
for my melanted brethren
Just trying to breathe freely like me
I clench these fists,
because a traffic stop
should not devolve
into a lynching in slow motion
Where a knee to back of the neck
is a modern day noose,
snuffing out yet another innocent
Life requires oxygen,
but so too does fire,
Thus a flame furiously burns
within this beating chest.
A feigned shared American idealism stokes its embers,
a system made intentionally broken
to break the black and brownest of us
The audacity they have to ask
for calm and cooler heads,
what happened when a knee was
once used in peaceful protest?
What happened when voices
of tormented spirits fell on deaf ears,
and only the wind was willing to listen?
Why has lady liberty turned a bind eye
as moving pictures
of melanted lives
were torn to shreds,
Converting minds
of family and friends
into shrines of dearly departed,
now and forever,
living in the past tense.
Distant Memories
hang in the museums
of brokenhearted thoughts,
Framed by too many unanswered questions
and
curated by a prevailing willful ignorance
How can we bridge the widening chasm
between the white and black spectrum,
when we don’t even speak the same language?
How did sirens and smoke grenades
become our new national dialect?
How can our voices be heard over
an incendiary rhetoric,
which lights the fuse
of a 400-year-old powder keg?
Animosity is the symptom
where disenfranchisement
is the sickness,
and although rage is not my normal setting
neither is passive silence.
A riot in my heart exists
and my words,
are the bricks
If America were a storefront
let her shattered windows
forever bare the evidence
That I am just one finger,
part of a collectively closed fist
Because together,
none of us are more powerful
than all of us combined,
because together,
WE… are the Resistance!
